National Park Story

Welcome to Yellowstone National Park!

Park History

Yellowstone National Park, established on March 1, 1872, holds the distinction of being the world's first national park. It was created by the 42nd U.S. Congress through the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant. Prior to this designation, Native Americans had lived in the area for over 10,000 years, and European-American trappers and settlers began reporting on its unique thermal features in the 1800s.

Early History:
Native Americans lived in the area for millennia, using its resources for hunting, fishing, and medicinal purposes.
European Exploration:
Fur traders and prospectors in the 1800s explored and reported on the area's thermal features, leading to expeditions and eventually the park's establishment.

Establishment as a National Park:

Yellowstone was formally created in 1872 to protect its unique geothermal features and natural wonders, marking the beginning of the national park system.

Ongoing Preservation:
The park continues to be a vital protected area for wildlife, geological wonders, and a diverse ecosystem, attracting millions of visitors each year.
