Hamilton Watch Company

Hamilton Watch Company
In 1892 the Hamilton Watch Company was established shortly after a group of Lancaster businessmen purchased the bankrupt Keystone Standard Watch Company at a sheriff's sale. During the same year the new owners of the Keystone Standard Watch Company merged with the Aurora Watch Company of Illinois. It owners decided to name the new company after James Hamilton, owner of a large tract of land which was granted to him from William Penn and what is now known as the city of Lancaster, PA.
The new watch company is given the name Hamilton Watch Company. The new company has one goal "to build only watches of the highest quality." It was decided to move the watch making equipment from the Aurora plante in Illinois to Lancaster. It wasn't until 1894 before the first watches were produced. Hamilton at first only produced size 18, 17 jeweled watches. Over the next six year Hamilton developes a reputation for creating pocket watches exceeding the quality and accuracy set by Webb C. Ball for railroad pocket watches.
During the first 15 years of business, Hamilton only produced two sized of pocket watches: Size 18 and Size 16. In 1907 due to pressures in the market, and under the leadership of the newly elected president Mr. Charles F. Miller, the company begins producing smaller movements.
